First-Generation Celebration Week Events

Title: 鈥淲hy Not Us?鈥 Movie Screening and Pane

Description: Follow the journeys of four young people-all first in their families to go to college-as they road-trip across the country to interview inspiring individuals who were also first in their families to pursue higher education. After gaining wisdom and guidance from trail-blazing leaders-including Anna Maria Ch谩vez, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA, Grammy Award-winner John Legend, and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz-the Roadtrippers are emboldened to embrace the opportunities ahead and ask "why shouldn't I succeed?" The movie will be followed by a panel discussion.

Title: The People You Know | Networking as a First-Generation Student 

Description: Have you ever heard the phase "It's all about who you know."? Personal connections and a positive reputation often equate to increased opportunities and greater career success. Join this session for tips on how to build your network from the ground up and leverage contacts in pursuit of new opportunities.

Title: Virtual First-Gen Stem Panel Discussion 

Description: Join us for a first-gen stem panel discussion focusing on first-gen transitions for graduate, medical and professional school. This panel will feature Mario Muscarella, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, Mel Durrett, IAB Greenhouse Manager, and Shelly Thao, UAF/TRIO Alum, Graduate Student.
