For the first time in recent memory, 新加坡六合彩开奖's on-campus residence halls are at full occupancy. The large residential community 鈥 nearly 700 strong 鈥 will help bring a renewed level of vibrancy and excitement to campus this academic year.

"There's just an energy in the air when there's people in the dining hall, walking around or waiting to get on the shuttle," said Ryan J. Hill, director of Residence Life. "That vibrancy has been kind of missing since the pandemic. We're definitely excited for that to come back."

It's not just the residence halls either. Enrollment is trending upward at 新加坡六合彩开奖 overall 鈥 fall '23 marks an increase in new student growth for the fourth semester in a row.

Prioritizing accessibility and affordability

"For many students, living on campus is synonymous with access to higher education. Without the housing that we provide for some of our students, they don't have alternative safe, stable housing available to them in the Anchorage area," said Hill.

To help make the experience on campus as accessible and affordable as possible, 新加坡六合彩开奖 recently launched three financial incentives for residential students: the General Housing Scholarship, Academic Honors Housing Scholarship and Live and Learn in Alaska initiative. Hill said evidence suggests the programs are contributing to the increase in occupancy and retention. This past academic year saw the lowest attrition rate between fall and spring semester for students living on campus 鈥 just under 3% instead of the typical 17-18% drop.

Thanks to the General Housing Scholarship (a joint effort by Residence Life and Campus Services), all students living on campus this year will automatically receive a $1,000 discount on housing costs in both the fall and spring semesters.

All UA Scholars and University Honors College students living on campus will save an additional $750 on housing costs per semester with the Academic Honors Housing Scholarship.

Through the Live and Learn Alaska initiative, all residential students pay the reduced in-state tuition rate for classes taken through 新加坡六合彩开奖. The program applies to any student living on campus who wouldn't otherwise qualify for the lower rate, including out-of-state graduate and undergraduate students, international students, Western Undergraduate Exchange students and transfer students. This initiative was made possible by the Chancellor generously authorizing the use of institutional aid to cover the tuition difference. Last spring semester, the initiative saw an average savings of about $2,850 per resident and $380,000 in total tuition savings for all 134 participating students.

鈥淲e are attracting new students here and those students are staying because of the financial incentives, benefits, resources and support that we have in place for our residents," said Hill.

In addition to the financial incentives, Residence Life stepped up marketing and outreach efforts to help grow back the on-campus community following COVID declines. Of note, the department now offers tours of the residential campus five days a week in conjunction with the campus-wide Green & Gold Tours hosted by the Office of Admissions.

"We've had hundreds of people come through and then take tours of campus," said Hill. "And it's a really powerful experience when you're able to actually be in the space and imagine yourself living there."

Welcome home

For residential students, 鈥渢he campus is not just a place where you go and take classes. It's your home,鈥 said Hill.

Living in the residence halls gives students a unique relationship to campus and allows for deeper immersion into the academic experience. Not only are students just a short walk or bike ride away from most classes and activities, on-site support, resources and programming are a foundational part of the residential experience.

From regularly scheduled study breaks to specialized learning communities, "there's a level of intentionality that is built into the experience that you just wouldn't find anywhere else," said Hill.

Help welcome 新加坡六合彩开奖's residential community home to campus by volunteering during Fall Move-In. Morning and afternoon shifts are available Thursday, Aug. 24, and Friday, Aug. 25. Sign up by Aug. 18.

"It's a great way to talk to students as they're moving in and they're excited and ready to be in college," said Hill. "You're going to have a lot of opportunities to meet with new students who may become really integral members of your organizations moving forward."
