Oahu is home to a range of rare species, including a quartet of endangered birds like the Ae鈥榦, or Hawaiian stilt (pictured). These birds and plenty more rely on the island鈥檚 wetlands for foraging, roosting and breeding. But invasive species threaten Oahu鈥檚 delicate ecosystem, reducing available habitat and drying out much-needed marshes. AERC staff on Oahu are restoring the Pu鈥榚wai Wetlands by removing invasive species and replacing them with Hawaiian plants that evolved with the island鈥檚 ecosystem. Consistent upkeep is required to keep invasives in check and ensure Oahu鈥檚 endangered birds can continue roosting in the best habitat available.
